Valerie L Sharpe, OD FAAO

Dr. Sharpe received her Doctor of Optometry degree from the Indiana University School of Optometry. She completed her residency in ocular disease at the Veteran’s hospital in Portland, Oregon affiliated with Oregon Health Sciences and Pacific University. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and board certified by the American Board of Certification in Medical Optometry.  For over a decade she has served as medical staff in the four corners area at Chinle Hospital, a Navajo Area Indian Health Service facility in Chinle, Arizona.  Her professional duties include the technical side of health IT management in the field of medical informatics. Dr. Sharpe continues to provide international eyecare services through her involvement with yearly medical eyecare missions in Mexico and Jamaica affiliated with IU VOSH. She is committed to serving within her profession and has held various national leadership roles as a national board examiner, national advisory group member for the Indian Health Service, and she is a regional vice-chair on the fellowship admissions committee for the American Academy of Optometry. Dr. Sharpe continues to love teaching and training her future colleagues, she has held Adjunct Clinical Professor positions at the Pacific University College of Optometry, the Southern California College of Optometry, The Ohio State University, and Indiana University. Dr. Sharpe is also an invited national lecturer. She enjoys inspiring other practitioners through her experience, most recently she has lectured on ocular trauma, uveitis, eyecare in the emergency department, IV medication in eyecare and electronic health record implementation. One of her most recent educational projects is working with The Pinhead Institute of Telluride “Scholars in the Schools’ program. Providing science vision lectures for regional community schools and bringing science to kids.
